The Trees Remember (나무는 기억한다) is a historical drama inspired by the real struggles of the Korean independence movement. Many resistance fighters fought in extreme conditions with little support, often knowing they might never be remembered.


Their names may be forgotten, but the land remembers.


The forests remember.


The mountains remember.

As Korean-Canadians, it’s incredibly uncommon to see our history being told through film locally, and even rarer to see a Korean-language story about the independence movement being created here in Vancouver. That’s exactly why this project exists. My hope is that this film can allow fellow Korean-Canadians to feel heard, seen, and represented in ways that I couldn't when growing up. This is something that means a lot to me personally.

Production

To authentically portray the conditions faced by these freedom fighters, we’ve been filming extensively in real harsh winter environments in British Columbia. Often working in remote, snow-covered landscapes to bring an honest, grounded, and immersive visual approach to the film.

We are currently in the early stages of production, with initial filming already underway. This project is being created independently, funded out of our own pockets, with the help of a small but dedicated team of artists, actors, and volunteers.

We are pursuing an international festival strategy for the film, with plans to submit to leading festivals such as the Busan International Film Festival, Berlinale, and Sundance. In the long term, this short is intended to serve as a proof of concept for a feature adaptation, allowing the story’s world and themes to be developed on a broader cinematic scale.
